THE FIGURE IN AMERICAN ART
  FOREWORD

The Eleanor Ettinger Gallery has once again assembled some of the finest painters in the representational genre today, to pay tribute to the human figure. This annual event is much anticipated both to delight in the works of the individual artists represented and to appreciate the collection of paintings as a whole.

Unquestionably, the primary focus of the recent resurgence of representational art has been the human figure, and this exhibition offers some of the best examples of the genre today. From the modern vision of Scott Goodwillie to the classical aesthetic of Gregory Calibey, the work is first and foremost accessible, and whether it is the emerging talent of Peter Van Dyck or the established mastery of Paul Oxborough, the draftsmanship is exemplary. Through their dynamic compositions, each of the artists represented allows us to see ourselves in a different way. Whether part of the world around us, as in the detailed interiors of Richard Piloco and the outdoor scenes of Glenn Harrington, or uniquely set apart from those surroundings, as in the simple contours of Richard Gibbons' figures and the expressive faces of Gregg Kreutz, these works are not only a translation of the subtleties of the human form itself, but also serve as a reflection of our humanity.

Singly, each of these men is a masterful painter; collectively, their work leaves an indelible impression. Through the unique perspectives of these eight enormously talented artists, we invite you to join us in our seventh annual celebration of the human figure.
