STEVE HUSTON
  FOREWORD

Steve Huston recently left the warmth of Southern California, where he has lived since the age of twenty, for the majestic beauty of Montana, a landscape more in tune with his birthplace of Anchorage, Alaska. The move, as it turned out, had a greater impact on him than just a change in locale. It caused Huston to reflect, in a very concrete way, on his past artistic accomplishments and to project what lies ahead. Through his newest body of work, Huston has endeavored to examine the framework of his creativity. "Each of us is an archaeologist sifting through and fitting together the fragments of our experience. And Art is in a uniquely privileged position to help us do that," says Huston.

In the early part of his career, the artist experienced his first success in the field of illustration, commissioned by such high profile clients as Paramount Pictures, MGM and Warner Brothers. He joined the faculty at the Art Center College of Design, where he had studied and received his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art, and also became an instructor of life drawing, anatomy and composition to the artists and animators at Disney and Dreamworks SKG studios.

Huston discovered his unique voice as a fine artist when he turned his eye towards the world of boxing, a sport he had participated in as an amateur. In that world of extreme physicality, he found a metaphor for the struggles and challenges that most of us face along our own individual journeys. These "men of the ring" would become natural artistic companions to the iconic female nudes Huston had created in the past. The two subjects addressed the extreme realities of masculine and feminine line and form...of force and passivity. When Huston added the worker to his repertoire, he expanded his vision to reflect more directly upon the American work ethic and the unspoken promise that sacrifice brings reward. Although he has always possessed masterful brushwork and virtuoso technique, Huston seems to have infused these new paintings with a richer, more vivid palette that intensifies the power of his compositions.
