FOREWORD
As the summer comes to a close and the seasons begin to change, the center of our daily lives will soon return to the indoors. With this annual transition in mind, we have asked a group of very accomplished realist painters to focus their energies on the outdoors…to give us their vision of a place and time that will last through the coming seasons and all the decades ahead. As a framework, we chose the European landscape, inviting artists who had all lived or spent many months traveling the countryside. Theirs, we knew would be a vision, not like a picture postcard of the perfect sunset over the Eiffel Tower, but of realities and places more intimate, intriguing, and certainly less familiar. Through their unique talents, we could travel to faraway scenes, getting lost in the dappled sunlight cast upon a grapevine, a lush meadow nestled between shadowed hillsides, or the late afternoon sky filled with promising clouds. As paintings of the human figure can often make us feel connected to each other, landscapes can make us feel a part of something larger. Their importance is not only to capture the world around us but to encourage our thoughts to wander and our minds to explore whenever we please.
