MARK ENGLISH
  FOREWORD

Mark English's magnificent landscapes embody the unique nature of the American heartland that is so awe inspiring. One might assume this connection to the countryside began as a child growing up in rural Texas. But his vision does not seem to come from a particular place, or for that matter from a man with his feet planted on the ground. Rather his view comes from an elevated and more far reaching perspective. His landscapes stretch out before us, as if he were embracing the America he loves. After all, Mark English himself embodies the American dream.

From his storybook beginnings of summers picking cotton, Mark English rose to the pinnacles of success in the world of illustration. First exposed to art by a traveling sign painter, he was to attain legendary status in a world that seemed quite out of reach when he was a youngster. Among the gold medals, plum assignments and prestigious clients, his career was highlighted with the commission of thirteen stamps for the United States Postal Service and inclusion in the Society of Illustrator's Hall of Fame.

But Mark English had something more to express…a vision of the America he had observed in his journey. Thus, he has dedicated the last twenty years to his fine art and to the creation of that individualistic statement. Yet one cannot say his work is without influences, with Diebenkorn, Klimt and Bonnard perhaps of the most importance.

This new exhibition is filled with paintings that are intricate and suffused with texture. Sky meets earth through fields of dappled color, and patterns define the terrain below. The soft edges and rich palette pull us into a world that is both real and abstract. This land, as it transforms itself with the rising and the setting of the sun, has been captured by an artist who represents the promise it holds for each of us.
