FOREWORD Each painting is like an individual performance for Richard Piloco. It is the coming together of study and spontaneity. He likens it to the actor featured in a long running play who can find nuance and meaning each time they step upon the stage. Though the language is memorized, the brushstroke is singular; every time you stand before the easel it is a new challenge. Combining technique, experience and inspiration Piloco strives for the elusive perfect performance, one in which you hit all the right notes. At its core, the reality which sparks Richard Piloco's interest has a social content. It is neither the dour workingman of the Ashcan School of the 20th century nor the idealized heroism at the heart of the WPA movement. But it is on some level the average person, neither colored with sentiment nor affectation. He brings to their portrayal vulnerability. Their persona he feels often informs the artist on a subconscious level as part of the creative process. Piloco is fascinated with the intuitive exchange between artist and model and the placement of that person in a specific environment. Painting the figure is a fluid experience while capturing the environment is a more concrete fascination with shapes and angles, light and shadow. Weaving those two distinctly different threads into one harmonious composition energizes his work with layers of complexity and meaning. A native of New York, Richard Piloco received his undergraduate degree from the School of Visual Arts and later attended the New York Academy of Figurative Art and Art Students League. He has taught at the Water Street Atelier, acted as a mentor at the Fashion Institute of Technology and currently teaches at the Grand Central Academy. His work has been featured in a number of publications including American Art Collector, American Arts Quarterly and American Artist magazine. Mr. Piloco's paintings have been exhibited across the United States as well as abroad. |
